Divis, Belfast

Divis looks over Belfast from the north side of the city and used to be a British Army training area. Now it’s owned by the National Trust and you can walk across the moors or up the hill to the viewpoint at the peak.

Divis and the hills surrounding it are known as the Belfast Hills. The name ‘Divis’ comes from Irish Dubhais, meaning ‘black back’, and refers to the layer of basalt which gives the hill its colour. It’s 1,568 feet tall, making it the biggest hill of the Belfast Hills and from 1953 to 2005 it was used by the Ministry of Defence as a training area for the British Army because its height gives it a great vantage point over Belfast. Now, after being handed over to the National Trust in 2005, it has become a popular place for walkers because of its gently sloping, well-tarmacked track. There are several different trails - some which climb upwards, others which stay fairly low and wind in around the grassy moors - but you’ll know you’ve reached the top when you get to Divis transmitting station and you can look over the hills and see across to the Mourne Mountains in the south of the province.
