Ponte 25 de Abril, Lisbon

Often considered as a twin sister to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the bridge in Lisbon is actually 100 metres longer, making it the longest suspension bridge in Europe.

Stretching across the estuary at the Tagus River in Lisbon, the Ponte 25 de April (25th April Bridge) was designed by the American Bridge Company, also responsible for the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to which it is often compared. It was inaugurated in August 1966 and named Salazar Bridge, after António de Oliveira Salazar, dictator of Portugal until 1974. The bridge was renamed after the date of the Carnation Revolution which overthrew his regime.

Beneath the bridge, former warehouses overlooking an attractive yachting marina have been transformed into a maze of cosmopolitan bars and restaurants. For a different perspective, the museum and observation deck afford an incredible view across the city.
