This square and the surrounding area are well-known for their expensive private clubs and casinos. Originally laid out in the 18th century by architect William Kent, the square was named after the noble Gloucestershire family of the same name, whose London residence stood nearby.
Famous residents have included Robert Clive of India and prime ministers Winston Churchill and George Canning. Berkeley Square also contains some of the oldest trees in the capital.
50 Berkeley Square is reputedly the site of London's most haunted house, now occupied by antiquarian book dealers Maggs. Legend has it that a young woman, who killed herself by jumping out of a window, haunts the attic and can scare people to death.
