The Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore was built in the 4th century and is one of the oldest churches in Italy and Milan.

Due to many fires, sections of the church have been rebuilt many times; nevertheless, there is an original dome and towers that survived the fires.

The chapels are one of the most interesting parts of the church. The most important one is the Chapel of St. Aquilino since it was built in the 5th century as a tomb for the daughter of Emperor Theodosius I and it is adorned with impressive mosaics.

Sometimes referred to as San Lorenzo alle Colonne, the church has 16 Corinthian colums from the 2nd century in front of the entrance. They were even believed to be taken from a nearby Roman temple.
