The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow

Located in central Moscow, this museum is one of the most important in Russia.

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts has the best collection of European art in Moscow. It is most famous for its Impressionist collection, which includes works by Monet, Cézanne, Degas and van Gogh. The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts opened in 1898 and was originally named after Tsar Alexandr III. It was inspired by the Moscow University's "Cabinet of Fine Arts and Antiquities" thanks in particular to the commitment of the Professor Ivan Tsvetaev. It includes works from ancient times up until the post-Renaissance. Exhibitions of foreign art masterpieces are usually held there.

The main building is an historical monument dating back to the 19th  century. The design was based on the model of a Classical temple on a high podium with an Ionic colonnade along its façade.

In the other buildings of the museum there are collections of 19th and 20th century European and American Art; there is also an educational centre, the Svyatoslav Richter Memorial Apartment and Ivan Tsvetaev's  educational art museum. Don't miss the the Department of Private Collections which includes outstanding  works of 20th century Russian artists such as Aleksandr Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, Aleksandr Tyshler, A. Weisberg and David Sterenberg.
