Picasso Museum, Malaga

Nobody should leave Malaga without visiting the Picasso Museum. After all, Malaga is Picasso’s birthplace. In the heart of the Old Town, the museum is in the Palacio de Buenavista, a stunning example of 16th-century Andalusian architecture.

The idea of a museum dates back to 1953 when a request was made to Pablo Picasso to donate some works to the Museum of Fine Arts. However, the project was not finalised until 2003, the year the museum was finally inaugurated.

The collection includes 233 of Picasso’s works, which he realised between 1892 and 1972. It covers the many styles, showing Picasso’s mastery in the use of different materials and techniques, through portraits, still life, landscapes, nudes, ceramics and works produced throughout the artist's life. You can admire his reinterpretation of the classics, his cubist years and explore the themes developed in his works: from social consciousness to the portrayal of mundane objects of everyday life. Most of the collection comes from donations from Christine and Bernard Picasso, daughter and grandson of the artist. Currently, the museum has more than 43 works temporarily ceded by the Almina and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso Foundation for the Arts.

The museum also organises temporary exhibitions scheduled throughout the year, as well as many cultural and educational activities, from seminars to concerts, guided tours and workshops.

In addition to marvelling at the famous Acrobat, the portrait of the ballerina Olga Khokhlova with Mantilla, or Jacqueline Sitting, a cubist portrait of the woman who later became his wife, don’t miss the archaeological site in the building, which gives a great insight into the Phoenician, Roman and Renaissance civilisations that once dwelt in Malaga.
