Puerta de Bisagra, Toledo

Toledo is a heavily fortified, walled city with many different city gates.

One of the best known is the Puerta de Bisagra Nueva (New Hinge Door) which was the main entrance to the city. This gate is of Arab origin but was rebuilt by Alonso de Covarrubias in the Renaissance style in 1559.

The door is made up of two different parts which are joined together by a courtyard complete with a statue of Charles V, King of Spain from 1516. The side of the gate that faces the city has two square towers joined by a semi-circle arch bearing the coat of arms of Charles I. The opposite side has the coat of arms of the city.
