La Forza del destino, Opera Bastille, Paris: 12-30 December 2022

A masterpiece of Verdi's mature years, The Force of Destiny is an opera of contrasts, in turn epic and prosaic, comic and tragic, spectacular and intimate. The composer combines all manner of styles - burlesque, dramatic, military and religious - and offers the protagonists passages of incomparable vocal splendour. Conducted by Jader Bignamini, Anna Netrebko, then Anna Pirozzi, Russel Thomas and Ludovic Tézier love each other and tear each other apart in Jean-Claude Auvray's elegant and colourful production which transposes the action to the Risorgimento period.
