National Museum, Stockholm

Sweden’s largest art museum is also the home of one of the world's first public art collections.

King Gustavus III left the royal art collections to the people of Sweden in 1792 and since 1866 they have been housed in the Nationalmuseum . The collection mainly focuses on Swedish 18th and 19th century painting, but Dutch and French artists of the same period are also present. The 18th century collection is considered one of the best in the world with artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Renoir and Degas all represented. The building itself is a work of art, modelled on the Renaissance style of Northern Italy - a fitting home for such fine works of art.
