This is the medieval centre of Switzerland’s capital, founded in 1191 on a hill encircled by the river Aare.
There are buildings from various periods, many of which were restored in the 18th-century, but have retained their original character, leading it to become a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983. The 6km of alleyways form one of the longest covered shopping promenades in Europe, where you’ll find international and local boutiques, as well as bars and cafes. Many of Bern’s main sights are also in this area, including the Parliament building, Zytglogge, Bear Pit and many Renaissance drinking water fountains.
