The Orangerie Museum presents for the first time an exhibition that establishes a connection between the works of two major artists of the 20th century: Chaïm Soutine (1893–1943) and Willem de Kooning (1904-1997).

The Orangerie Museum presents an exhibition that brings together the works of Chaïm Soutine (1893–1943), painter of the Paris School with Russian origin (present-day Belarus) and those of Willem de Kooning (1904-1997), American abstract expressionist of Dutch origins.

Specifically, the exhibition will explore the impact of Soutine's painting on the pictorial vision of the great American artist.

Soutine has in fact marked the generation of post-war painters, both through the expressive power of his brush and for his figure as a "cursed artist" grappling with the vicissitudes and excesses of the Parisian bohème.

His work was often exhibited in the United States between the 30s and 50s of the last century, when the figurative artist of European tradition was reinterpreted in the light of new artistic theories. Gestural painting and the strength Soutine's canvases convey lead critics and curators to proclaim him "prophet", herald of American abstract expressionism.
