Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli, Turin

Gallery showcasing 25 priceless artistic masterpieces housed within an architecturally iconic glass and metal roof-top container atop the repurposed Lingotto Centre, a former FIAT car plant reconverted.

It sits in the centre of what once was a test track of the original FIAT factory. Designed by Renzo Piano, winner of the 1998 Pritzker Architecture Prize and listed as one of TIME’s 100 most influential people, this awe-inspiring space houses the private collection of Giovanni and Marella Agnelli heads of the FIAT dynasty.

Referred to as the ‘Scringo’ (treasure chest) it is the crowning jewel of a 20-year regeneration of the landmark Lingotto complex in Turin. On it’s completion in 1923 it was the world’s largest car factory. Designed by Giacomo Mattè Trucco (b. 1869 d. 1934) and said by Le Corbusier to be [one of the] “most impressive sights in industry”. Beneath the gallery in the main body of the factory there is now a conference and exhibition space, shopping centre and hotel.

The concise, but extraordinary, collection of treasures on display here feature six paintings by Canaletto, seven by Matisse, two Picasso’s (Homme accoudé sur une table 1915-1916 and L’Hétaire 1901) as well as pieces by Amedeo Modigliani, Edouard Manet, PIerre-Auguste Renoir and Italian Futurists Giacomo Balla and Gino Severini, as well as two ‘Dancers’ sculptural works by Baroque inspired Venetian sculptor Antonio Canova.
