Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA): All Year

The Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) is a striking modern glass and white-walled structure amidst the much older churches and monuments of the historic district around it.

The Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), or the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, houses a constantly expanding collection of some 5,000 works. This permanent collection, which was only started as the museum was under construction in the 1980s, focuses on modern Spanish and Catalan artists from the 1940s onwards, beginning with early European pop art and ending with today's new artists.

The museum also hosts regular temporary exhibitions, lectures, and cultural events which highlight the works of modern artists, with an emphasis on the experimental, the innovative and the cutting-edge. Through these exhibitions, the museum aims to expand the public scope of artwork and foster the creation of new work.

The building which houses the museum was a custom-made structure designed by Richard Meier and funded by the MACB Foundation and Consortium, completed in 1995. It sits in the middle of the Plaça dels Àngels, a striking modern glass and white-walled structure amidst the antiquated churches and monuments of the historic district around it.
