Desvres, France

The town’s name is synonymous with the beautiful earthenware pottery for which it is famous.

A short drive inland from Boulogne you find the small market town of Desvres, best known for its production of pottery. Fragments of clay found in the nearby forest of Desvres - well worth a visit - testify to the craft being practised as far back as Gallo-Roman times, but it was not until the 17th-century that production really began.

Within the town itself there are numerous workshops, museums and factories that are dedicated to all facets of ceramic production. The Musée de la Céramique is perhaps the most notable, with over 700 pieces spanning 300 years of history: from traditional clay designs to striking contemporary pieces.
