Gentbrugse Meersen, Ghent

This large green area is one of the largest in Ghent, with an area of about 240 hectares; its construction began in 2013.

The area includes the Frans Toch park with the Braem Castle, the Forest of Peace and the Rattendaele park.

Part of the Gentbrugse Meersen is owned by the city of Ghent.
In 2014, sports and recreational areas were built inside it and there are numerous concrete pedestrian and cycle paths.

Near the Peace Forest is the Peace Monument.

In 2015, 100 hectares were added in the southern part of the area. Here the emphasis is placed more on nature, in particular on fauna: there are in fact 18 cattle and horses that graze freely and a wide variety of water birds (in whose dedicated area the public cannot access).

Within this big area it is possible to carry out a large number of different activities (playing sports, doing gardening, having a picnic ...). There is also a curious path created for walking barefoot: the terrain has not been artificially modified and the soil changes according to weather conditions and the season.

In short, it is a perfect place to experience wild nature without leaving the city.
