Cologne City Hall, Cologne

Just off Hohe Straße in the centre of Cologne, excavations during its restoration revealed it was constructed on a Roman Praetorium which was the base for the Roman Governors of Germania.

Today it’s used by part of the city’s government. So, the fate of Cologne has been determined in the same place for 2000 years. The building has been extended throughout the years and includes  a 14th-century main city hall building, a 15th-century Gothic-style tower, 16th-century Renaissance-style loggia and cloister, and 20th-century atrium. The tower is decorated with over 100 sculptures and has a glockenspiel with 48 bronze bells which sound four-times a day.
