Oxford Castle & Prison, Oxford

Built in 1066, over time the site was transformed from a castle into a prison.

Tours led by costumed guides tell the history of Oxford and its castle, during which you can climb the Saxon St George’s Tower which is one of the oldest buildings in Oxford, descend underground into the 900-year-old crypt, the only surviving remains of St George’s Chapel, you can explore the 18th-century Debtors’ Tower and Prison D-Wing and look around the mound of the 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle. After the tour, you can explore at your own leisure the castle’s prison and wider site. Hear the stories of the prison’s most infamous inmates and discover the prison cells.
