The Beatles Childhood Homes, Liverpool

These are the two small houses in suburban Liverpool where John Lennon and Paul McCartney grew up, practiced their music and wrote some of their first songs.

This tour by the National Trust takes you inside the buildings so you can explore the houses for yourself. Mendips, the childhood home of John Lennon, is a fine example of 1950s semi-detached housing. It is more luxurious than 20 Forthlin Road, and was maintained by John’s Aunt Mimi. You can still see the house and garden as it was when they lived there. 20 Forthlin Road, home of Paul McCartney, is a typical example of post-war terraced council housing, and, maintained only by Paul, his brother Jim and his father, the house is full of mismatched wallpaper, clutter and threadbare sofas.
