Cathédrale Saint-Jean, Lyon

In the heart of Vieux Lyon is Lyon’s Cathedral that took over three centuries to complete, so the finished building is a stunning mix of various architectural styles from the different periods.

In the heart of Vieux Lyon, (just steps away from the metro station so you can’t miss it) is Lyon’s Cathedral. Construction began in 1175 and was only complete three centuries later in 1481 - this means the building mixes various architectural styles from the different periods, as it began with inspiration from the Romanesque and ended up merging with Gothic. The cathedral also features striking stained glass windows showing various biblical scenes, as well as one of France’s oldest astronomical clock which dates back to the 14th century. Over the centuries, the cathedral has been the site of many important historical events, including the coronation of Pope John XXII in 1316, and the marriage of Henry IV and Marie de Medici in 1600.

Entry to the cathedral is free.
