Rivalta Castle, Gazzola, Emilia Romagna

Considering Rivalta’s tumultuous history - withstanding sieges, plundering, family feuds, and assassinations - you may be surprised by the sumptuous stately home that it is today.

From the depths of the castle’s cellars and prisons, to the heights of the tower overlooking the Trebbia river, it is grand enough to have welcomed royalty and state leaders, including Princess Margaret who spent her summers there. Once owned by the Landis, a powerful, noble family who governed the Val di Taro region from 1551 to 1582, you can still admire their family portraits on the walls of the castle’s inner courtyard.
