In true medieval fashion the castle is still only accessible by drawbridge, jutting out of the 80-metre high rock on which it was built.
Gropparello’s history is only too present, so be wary of the ghost of Rosania Fulgosio, walled up by her husband in the 13th-century. Explore the wild parkland and botanic gardens - home to over 1000 rose plants - by paths hanging onto the very edge of the cliff. Gropparello’s current owners have brought the castle back to life, organising re-enactments of medieval banquets in the original dining hall, and building a children’s fairy-tale park in the grounds.
