Haus Der Kunst, Munich

This museum displays some of the world's most exciting contemporary art.

If you’re someone who thinks of typical ‘modern art’ as being something that a three year old child could make, or as simply being a waste of your time, you should definitely go to Haus der Kunst and have your mind changed. This museum is overflowing with so much art that it will be impossible for you not to find something to admire. Totally opposite to the idea of a stuffy art museum, Haus der Kunst almost feels like an artistic playground; it’s simply so much fun to be there because such a huge quantity of ‘things’ are packed in to one space.

Haus der Kunst does not have a permanent collection but rather displays recently made pieces by contemporary artists. The building is huge and you will need more than a couple of hours if you wish to see everything on display. After your visit you can come back in a few months and a whole new crop of artworks will be there for you to explore. More than simply just paintings, you might find sculpture, audio-visual, or interactive pieces here. The museum is open later than most others and is in the north-east corner of the Atstadt, so it is definitely worth a visit after you’re done sunbathing in the Englischer Garten. The museum shop, which includes the Walter König bookstore, is also exceptional. There you will find an extensive library of arty books, films, and souvenirs. There is also a bar which looks on to the Englischer Garten, and one of the trendiest clubs in Munich is in the museum’s basement.
