Vogogna Castle, Vogogna, Piedmont, Italy: All year

A medieval castle, with a fascinating story and a stunning view of the enchanted town of Vogogna.

The recently restored Castello Visconteo di Vogogna tells its long history and that of the town. To protect the town, the bishop of Novara, Giovanni Visconti beefed up the fortress in 1348. In the 18th century, the castle was used as a refuge for political prisoners and criminals, and later as a prison until 1914. Today you can explore the narrow cells and the prisoners’ graffiti in the five storey tower, the permanent exhibition on the ground floor, the touring exhibits on the first floor and the living quarters on all three floors.
