Acaja Castle, Fossano, Piedmont, Italy: All year

The Acaja Castle is a 14th-century castle in Italy. It’s considered to be the symbol of the town, Fossano.

Originally built between 1324 and 1332 by Philip I of Acaia to keep the baddies out, the castle became the home of  the Savoy family in the 15th century. From the end of the 17th century, it was used as a prison and barracks. Nowadays, the city library and the town archives are there, and various cultural activities, exhibitions and concerts take place there.

Its architectural style reflects the many uses for which it has been put to use.  The castle mixes 14th-century elements, such as the moat that surrounds the fortress, the drawbridge, and the four robust towers, with the 15th-century courtyard and frescos, and the 16th-century hall of grotesques, decorated by Giovanni Caracca. Climb to the top of the panoramic tower and enjoy the unique view of the city and the Alps.
