Literaturhaus, Munich: All Year

Opened in 1997 as a monument to the importance of literature in Munich, the Literaturhaus is a forum for everything to do with the German written word. Not quite a museum, but rather a space in which creativity with the German language can be explored, it is certainly worth a look round for anyone who likes to read and perhaps wishes to improve their German.

The building itself houses an exhibition to do with a certain theme in German literature, for example, Nature, that changes every few months. When you visit you will find lots of quotes from various German texts, along with artefacts and objects to do with the theme that the Literaturehaus has chosen to focus on. You may find postcards written by Thomas Mann or photographs of Kafka on holiday, for example. The effect of the space will certainly make you want to explore the works of these German writers further as the curators do an effective job of giving you just enough text to read without turning the exhibition into a library.

The main purpose of the Literaturhaus is to act as a platform for events such as authors’ visits and book readings. It would not be a bad idea  to look out for events that are going on at the Literaturehaus while you are on your travels as many of them are in conducted in languages apart from German. Over the years many famous authors have visited the Literaturehaus and you may find that your favourite author happens to be doing so while you are also in town. Check it out.
