If you want to get popular with the ladies, then do as Giovanni Boldini did and paint their portraits. You'll see to what he owed his succes at the Mapfre Foundation in Madrid from the 14th September 2019.
Boldini was an accomplished male portraitist too, but it was the female form that he took to new heights. In the Belle Époque, he was a favourite with female clients because he painted them as taller, slimmer and more attractive. Looking at his paintings, it’s easy to see why he was so in demand. It’s not just the beauty of the female forms but the informal poses and flowing brushstrokes that give an impression of intimacy and modernity. In the late 19th century, he developed his signature style that combined traditions from 17th and 18th-century portraiture with more modern abstractness.
The Mapfre Foundation will be showing around 100 of Boldini's works that encompass his whole career and different artistic periods. His works will be displayed alongside a selection of paintings by Spanish artists that were influenced by Boldini, such as Raimundo de Madrazo, Joaquín Sorolla, Rogelio de Egusquiza, Martín Rico and Francesc Masriera.
