Museo della Scultura Contemporanea, Matera

The Museum of Contemporary Sculpture includes nearly 400 sculptures from the end of the 19th-century to the present day, by Italian and international artists, including Kengiro Azuma, Maria Lai and Duilio Cambellotti. Some of them are exhibited underground, making it the only troglodyte museum in the world.

The sculptures are exhibited in the large frescoed rooms of the elegant 17th-century Palazzo Pomarici and in underground spaces, which correspond to an ancient network of hypogeums dug into the tufa. The MUSMA is thus the only troglodyte museum in the world.  Enjoy the combination of ancient and contemporary sculpture, in bronze, marble or steel set in a 17th-century palazzo and its medieval underground spaces.
