Borough Market, London

Whether you want to stock up for a picnic, or hover and sample as you go, the Borough Market has stalls to satisfy all tastes.

The only fully independent market in London, Borough Market was closed in 1755 but reopened by a group of Southwark residents who managed to buy a plot of land between them to maintain the market. While the market area is packed with cafés and restaurants, the best food is to be had from the market stalls, open Thursday to Saturday. Whether you want to stock up for a picnic, or hover and sample as you go, there are stalls to satisfy all tastes. Many sell meat, vegetables and artisanal products, but there are enough ready-to-eat stalls to make this a bustling lunch-time hangout.

From spiced pancakes with Punjabi chutneys to Argentine street food to a German sausage deli, it’s an international flavour. A French patisserie and an amazing cheesecake stall help pad out the picnic basket, and there’s nowhere better for a well-packed meat pie. Most of the vendors here are award-winning producers, so you’re in for a quality stop. If you just want to enjoy the bustle, there are burger stalls with tables laid out under the archways.
