This lavish 18th-century Baroque church overlooks the Podil neighborhood from the top of Andriivs'kyi Descent, to which it gave its name.
It was built in 1754 by Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli - also responsible for the Winter Palace in St Petersburg - to honour Saint Andrew, who is recognised as the "Apostle Rus". According to the chronicle The Tale of Bygone Years, Saint Andrew came to the Dnieper River’s banks in the 1st-century and planted a cross where the church now stands, claiming that the sparse area would one day become a great city.
The church was built in the lavish Baroque style. It consists of a single dome with five small spires, and Corinthian columns decorating its façade. The interior is closed to visitors, but you can climb to the platform around its base for views down Andriivs'kyi Descent towards Podil and the Dnieper River.
