The Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow

No visit to Moscow is complete without a visit to the world-renowned Bolshoi Theatre.

Russian theatre is synonymous with Bolshoi. One of the largest musical theaters in the world, a mixture of dramatic and opera performances were originally performed in the State Academic Theatre Bolshoi.

The theatre stands in the same place where the Petrovsky Theatre was located, inaugurated in 1780 and set on fire in 1805. In 1819 a competition was launched for the design of the new theatre, which was won by Andrej Michajlov. However, his project was deemed to be too expensive, so the Governor of Moscow Dmitrij Vladimirovič Golicyn commissioned architect Giuseppe Bove to modify it. The new Gran (Bol'šoj) Petrovsky Theater was inaugurated on 18 January 1825 with the ballet Cendrillon by Fernando Sor.

Numerous foreign companies and exceptional actors took to the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. Among them we remember the tenors Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras as well as stars of the Parisian and Viennese opera. It is a truly wonderful place to enjoy the biggest names in the theater and opera world.
