Medieval museum, Stockholm

A major archaeological investigation in the 1970s led to many remnants of mediaeval Stockholm being uncovered and subsequently preserved in this museum.

Right outside the Swedish Parliament building, the Mediaeval Museum was opened in 1986 and holds many remarkable finds including war ships, graveyards and 55 metres of the original town wall.

Its exhibition mixes the dark and sinister world of crime and punishment in the Middle Ages with the more light-hearted sides of life back then. For all its dirt and disease, it was also a time of trade, prosperity and cultural development.
