Central Cemetery, Vienna

Astonishing though it may seem today, Mozart was buried in an unmarked plot in December 1791 in St Marx cemetery and no one knows the exact location of his grave.

You'll find Mozart’s stone memorial in the Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery), one of the largest cemeteries in the world. Designed by the Austrian sculptor Hans Gasser in 1859, the memorial was first erected 6km away in St Marx cemetery, but it was moved in 1891 to the Zentralfriedhof to mark the centenary of Mozart’s death. Today you’ll find it at the centre of a cluster of great composers’ graves, including those of Brahms, Beethoven and Schubert.
