Byzantine Museum of Antivouniotissa, Corfu

The Antivouniotissa Museum is in the former church of the Holy Mother of God Antivouniotissa, one of the oldest and richest religious monuments on Corfu. It includes  post-Byzantine religious art of the Cretan and early Heptanese schools in Corfu.

The building is perfect for displaying these works of arts with its arched doorways and windows as well as a bell-tower with arched openings at the top.

Inside, the museum retains Heptanesian Basilica style architecture, with high pews and painted wallpaper. These have been reconstructed from the originals when the church was built at the end of the 15th-century. The artwork on display tracks religious and artistic output on Corfu from the 15th to the 19th-century. Two of the  artists featured are Michael Damaskinos and Emmanuel Tzanes, post-Byzantine Cretan painters.
