The exhibition featuring Gerwald Rockenschaub's work arrived at the Belvedere 21, Vienna, in late 2022

Gerwald Rockenschaub's work follows the principle of reducing elements, structures, and color contrasts to only the essential. The works of the radical minimalist are simple and precise but also complex. They range from the geometric abstract oil paintings of the early 1980s, which are associated with the Neo-Geo movement, to industrially produced Plexiglas panels and huge inflatable PVC objects, to his more recent computergenerated animations. Spare interventions within the architecture of the respective exhibition spaces reveal and invert the relationship between viewer, artwork, and space.

Gerwald Rockenschaub was born in Linz in 1952 and studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He has lived and worked in Berlin since 1999. Numerous exhibitions at home and abroad include the 45th Venice Biennale in 1993, the mumok in Vienna in 2004, documenta 12 in Kassel in 2007, and the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in 2011.
