The Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris

Due to a fire in 2019, which wreaked havoc on the building, the church will be closed to worshipers and visitors until 2024.  In spite of this, you can still catch a glimpse of some of the intricate stone carvings of the Virgin Mary, looming Gargoyles and flying buttresses, the Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe.

See for yourself why this remarkable cathedral inspired the classic work of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Even before entering the cathedral, the square in front retains traces of its medieval legacy. Street performers and fire dancers draw crowds, echoing the spiritual mood of the cathedral with a contemporary ring.

Built on the small island between the river Seine on the Île de la Cité, known as “Our Lady,” Notre Dame has many highlights within, including the famous south rose window built in the 13th century, a prominent 17th-century organ and the celebrated bell tower which you can climb 100 plus stairs to view.

Entering through the austere wooden doors, the cathedral’s interior is full of high stone archways and stunning stained glass windows, reflecting lively patterns of speckled light.  Illustrated with biblical stories and marble statues, the Notre Dame will surely take your breath away.
