This museum has an extensive collection of oil paintings, ranging from the 17th-century to the early 21st-century.
Many of the paintings were donated to the gallery, however some were bought, such as Sir Alfred East’s ‘The Return of the Flock’ which was purchased in 1930. Some examples from the early work collections include a portrait of Sir Edward Montagu, and several 18th-century paintings by Nathan Fielding. Highlights from the more modern collection are: ‘Landscape with a Stream Chaintreuil, France’ (1897) by Mark Fisher, and ‘The Third Republic, View of Porte St-Denis, Paris, France’ (1932) by Walter Sickert, which were both bequests from Frank Hindley Smith in 1940.
