Richard III Experience at Monk Bar, York

You can explore the history of the last Plantagenet King of England and the legacy he left on York.

Richard III’s short reign was marked by rebellion, controversy and challenges, resulting in his death at the Battle of Bosworth aged 33. At the Richard III experience, you can find out more about his early life as his brother, Edward IV, struggled for the throne of England, see arms and armour from his reign and enjoy multimedia presentations about the key battles of the Wars of the Roses. Children can experience their medieval camp, featuring the gruesome bits of Richard’s history provided by Horrible Histories author, Terry Deary. The experience is in Monk Bar, which is one of four major fortified gateways on York’s city walls, built in the early 14th-century.  As well as being part of the city’s defence system, it has also been used as a temporary prison and a police house.
