This neoclassical monument at the end of Spianada Square was built in the early 19th-century to honour British military officer Sir Thomas Maitland.
Colonel George Whitmore of the Royal Engineers designed this monument which is typical of the style of the British rule of Corfu (1815 -1864) and recognisable in the 1981 Bond film 'For Your Eyes Only'.
The sculptural work was done by the local sculptor Pavlos Prosalentis. Since then, due to erosion, it has been restored. The monument was built on top of a Venetian-era underground water cistern and the two entrances were intended to be used by those who still used the tank afterwards.
