Kardaki Temple, Corfu

This Archaic Doric temple, built around 500 BC, is in the grounds of the villa Mon Repos on Analipsis Hill in the east of Corfu. You can wander around  these extraordinary ruins at your will.

The temple  was built in the eastern ancient city of Kerkyra and discovered accidentally in 1822 by British engineers performing excavations to free the natural flow of water which had been stopped by soil. Since then it has become the most significant archaeological site of the island. Local tradition says that the temple was dedicated to either Poseidon, Asklipios or Apollo. The temple has architectural features that belong to both the Ionic and colonial architecture of Ancient Greece.
