Friedensengel, Munich: All year

The Friedensengel, (Angel of Peace) is a monument to the peace that followed the Franco-Prussian war. The column, which stands at thirty-eight metres high, is in a park called Maximiliansanlagen, on the east bank of the Isar. From the chapel that supports the tower you have a view into the Aldstadt, down Prinzregentstraße. At the base of the monument are carvings and mosaics of classical figures and scenes. The monument epitomises a different kind of traditional feel than the beerhalls and lederhosen that you will get in the city centre. This part of Munich, called Bogenhausen, feels almost eastern European and unpolished. It isn’t particularly catered towards touristic tastes and is more absorbing for it - check out the tramline that circles the Maximilianeum just south of Friedensengel if you want to see what I mean. Nevertheless, when you want to get away from the shopping and the sightseeing in the centre of Munich, Friedensengel and Maximiliansanlagen are good places to retreat to.
