Created in 1978 by the London Royal Ballet, Mayerling is one of Kenneth MacMillan's most famous ballets. For this vast three-act fresco, the British choreographer drew inspiration from a historical event: the suicide of Archduke Rudolf, heir to the Austrian throne, in 1889. In this piece, the choreographer attempts to unravel the social, political and personal pressures that led to this tragedy, alternating grandiose and intimate scenes. The highly virtuosic choreography is complemented by the romantic music of Franz Liszt.
