Gaudí's Casa Milà, best known as La Pedrera, is a masterpiece of modernist architecture in the heart of Barcelona.

Best known as “La Pedrera” because it looks like an open-cast quarry, Casa Milà is one of Barcelona’s most emblematic buildings and one of the best examples of modernist architecture. Designed by Antoni Gaudí, a name that still draws millions of people to his hometown of Barcelona, the house was built between 1906 and 1912, and in 1984 was declared a  World Heritage Site by UNESCO. La Pedrera is managed by  the Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation, which  organises  exhibitions, conferences, workshops and other cultural events.

The building, originally intended to be two independent residential blocks, has one of the most recognisable façades in the world. It is the only place in Barcelona, which is dedicated to  Gaudí with the aim of understanding the work of this great architect. A visit to La Pedrera by day includes two distinct museum spaces: The Espai Gaudí (the attic, where visitors can see an exhibition about Gaudí’s life and work.) and the La Pedrera Apartment (an apartment that recreates the lifestyle of the Catalan bourgeoisie in the early 20th century), together with the Courtyards-Provença and Passeig de Gràcia-, the Exhibition Hall (the former residence of the Milà’s) and the Roof-Terrace.

In total you can visit 4,500 m2 divided between five floors. The only areas that cannot be visited are the private homes and the offices that are in the building. The audio guide, included in the ticket price, provides information about the visitable areas and the main features of the building and the architect Antoni Gaudí.

DIVENTO suggests…

Making the most of the visit to the rooftop terrace. The chimneys and ventilation towers -decorated in trencadís, typical ceramics mosaics- are worth admiring both for their unusual beauty and their practical use, integrated to the building’s functionality. And don’t miss the views to Passeig de Gràcia!
