Poolbeg Lighthouse, Dublin

This red 19th-century lighthouse offers good views across Dublin Bay.

The first lighthouse was built on the end of the Great South Wall of the Poolbeg peninsula in 1768 and apparently first operated on candlepower. It has changed a lot since then, switching to oil power in 1786, before being completely rebuilt in 1820. The current building is bright red and contrasts with the blue sea surrounding it. You can drive to Poolbeg car park and walk out to the lighthouse, or walk an extra kilometre from Ringsend, in the suburbs of Dublin. The panorama of the city, with the Wicklow Mountains behind it, is best enjoyed at sunrise or sunset.
