Duomo di Milano, Cathedral, Milan

Milan’s fascinating cathedral is the highlight of the city.

The building was commissioned by bishop Antonio da Saluzzo in 1385. Over the centuries the designs were glorified and improved even more through the work of many different architects and artists that contributed to this magnificent Gothic church.

The cathedral is adorned with sculptures and statues. It happens to be the building with most statues in the world, more than 3400. The most notable statue is the Madonnina which is a copper statue covered in gold leaf.

The marriage of Archduke Ferdinand, ruler of Milan, to Maria Beatrice D’Este was celebrated here in 1771. The composer W.A. Mozart, barely 15 years old at the time, wrote Ascanio in Alba for this occasion.

The inside of the cathedral is intricate yet simple. There are large pillars, more statues, and marble altars.  Moving forward, visitors can go to the rooftop of the cathedral for a small admission fee which offers stunning views of the city and beyond into the Alps.

This cathedral is the dominating structure in Milan, the main landmark of the city and definitely worths a visit.
