Colosseum, Rome: All Year

The Colosseum is one of Rome’s most stunning monuments!

The Colosseum is one of Rome’s most stunning monuments.  This immense amphitheater was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian in 70 AD.  The Colosseum was home to games, gladiator fights, and animal fights.

The structure of the Colosseum is very unique.  Made of stone and concrete, there are 3 stories of arches to support the columns.  They used Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns.  The Colosseum held more than 50,000 people and awnings were available to block the sun in the summer heat.

By the 6th century AD, all events taken place in the Colosseum were stopped as the Roman Empire was on hard times.  The arena was also damaged by earthquakes and severe weather and sadly enough, the Colosseum was soon abandoned.  In the 18th century, many Popes saw the value that it had and its importance to Italy.  Excavators have been restoring and repairing the arena ever since, as it is a huge attraction for visitors from all over the world.

The Colosseum is an attraction you must see during a visit to Rome!  Most people visit the Colosseum with a small tour to ensure a spot.
