Welcome to the heart of Rome!  As one of the seven hills of Rome, the Capitoline Hill happens to be the smallest but the most important.

Welcome to the heart of Rome!  As one of the seven hills of Rome, the Capitoline Hill happens to be the smallest but the most important.

During ancient times, the Romans began to build tremendous temples.  These temples gave Rome a sense of strength and power.  The biggest temple located on the Capitoline Hill is the Temple of Jupiter.  It was built by the first Etruscan king of Rome, Tarquinius Priscus, in the 6th century BC.  The large temple was created in dedication to Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva and is adorned with reliques and statues.

Today only remains of the temples are viewable.  During the 19th century, colossal monuments were built on sections of the hill.  Piazza del Campidoglio, a beautiful square designed by Michelangelo is found on the northern side of the hill.  The hill offers breathtaking views of the ancient Roman Forum!

The remains of the temples are an ancient highlight of the Eternal City.  It is highly recommended to visit the Capitoline Hill with a guided tour.
