Republican German Drama Theater, Almaty

The Republican German Drama Theater was established on December 25, 1980, in the small town of Temirtau, in Kazakhstan.

Thanks to a talented troupe, a strong and diverse repertoire, the theatre became an increasingly popular time on tour. The repertoire of the theatre has always consisted of German and Russian classics. With the advent of director E. Schmidt, the classical repertoire expanded significantly and was enriched with foreign classics, as well as musical performances for children.

The German drama theatre grew so much, that it outgrew Temirtau and in 1989 it moved to Almaty. At the same time, mass emigration of Germans to their homeland began and actors and other theatre employees began to leave. The theatre troupe was forced to become international, which required radical changes in the aesthetics and direction of the theatre. Nowadays the theatre is a place for discussion and experiment.

The current head of the theatre, Irina Simonova, is looking for new approaches to fulfilling the main task of the theatre, which is the preservation of the cultural traditions of the German people. The theatre has chosen a new goal and continues to experiment, using such proven traditions as inviting directors from different cities and countries, and opening and closing the season with premiere performances.
