Churchill War Rooms, London

Deep underground, these are the atmospheric World War Two headquarters of the British government.

The Churchill War Rooms include the Cabinet War Rooms and the Churchill Museum, in the atmospheric World War II headquarters of the British government. Deep underground, they are right next to St James's Park and not far from other wartime sites such as HMS Belfast and the Imperial War Museum. They provide visitors with a fascinating insight into the way Winston Churchill and his cabinet directed and won the Second World War.

Having gone through the inconspicuous entrance, there is an excellent tour (with free audio) which allows you to look into a series of rooms, including the Cabinet War Rooms which haven't changed since they were used during the war. These include the Transatlantic Telephone Room, Churchill's Bedroom and the fantastic Map Room with its coloured telephones, maps and even wartime sugar cubes. There are sleeping quarters not only for members of the Cabinet, but for a couple of dozen other people needed to send and receive messages 24 hours around the clock.

There is also a moving museum devoted to Churchill which describes his life through objects, interactive activities and original clips of Churchill speeches.
