Montesarchio Castle, Montesarchio, Campania, Italy

A hilltop castle that today holds the National Archaeological Museum of Sannio Caudino.

On top of Monte Taburno is a 15th-century castle built during the Aragonese rule of Southern Italy (1442 to 1494). Both the Lombards (568 to 774) and the Normans (999 to 1139) had also built forts here.

The castle has been a prison (1830 to 1945) and an orphanage (1960s). Today, you can go for a walk up the hill and pop your head into the National Archaeological Museum of Sannio Caudino.

Make sure you see the 4th-century BCE “Assteas Vase”.
