Sammlung Schack, Munich

With a collection of pictures looking like scenes from Brothers Grimm fairy tales, this is one of the most quintessentially German museums you will find.

Perhaps the most German of the Pinakothek Museum family, the Sammlung Schack is also the smallest and can unfortunately also be the most humid. It houses the art collection of Count Adolf Friedrich von Shack (1815-1894). Shack is primarily known for his devotion to the world of literature and the paintings in his collection reflect this. They depict scenes from German folklore and history, as well as from classical texts by Dante, Petrarch, and Goethe. Religious and pastoral motifs abound in each canvas. Lots of extracts from well known canonical texts have been layered onto the walls of the museum to accompany the paintings and add to their narrative quality. There are also many landscapes of locations from classical antiquity.

The Sammlung Schack museum is a window into the the Romantic tradition of art in nineteenth-century Germany. As a result, the names of the artists on display are not necessarily known across the world, but are rather more Germany-centric. This means that the museum does feel a little too niche and unfortunately, unlike the rest of the Pinakothek museums, Sammlung Schack does not provide an audio-guide. If you wish to get round Munich in a hurry and are looking for a wealth of variety in the pieces that a museum has on display then Sammlung Schack may not be for you. On the other hand, if you have a keen interest in this particular period of German art or are in the mood to submerge yourself in all the particulars of German aesthetic culture, then the Sammlung Schack is not a bad place to start.
